Matt: The unique thing about Kyle is that he is not a regular superhero, that he is actually a human being. He doesn't come from another world. There's actual scientific explanation for him. He has lots of vulnerability that human beings have and lots of feelings and emotions that we all deal with as humans.
David Himelfarb, Executive Producer: Our show is about becoming about the development of a superhero. Kyle is an unusual superhero. I'm old enough to read the first Spider-Man, the first Silver Surfer, the first Fantastic Four when they came out. They're all original stories and it's absolutely fascinating how they evolved and came to be.
Julie Plec, Supervising Producer: This is a human story in the midst of sci-fi, in the midst of its wonderful, fantastic mystery. It's a human story about relationships, about growing up, about maturing, about being in conflict, and falling in love.
(Clip of 1x10 airs: Kyle and Amanda are at Kyle's going away pool party.) Kyle: No goodbyes. Amanda: It's like, "See ya." (She hugs him.) Julie Plec: Yeah, he can jump off a building. He can swim like a dolphin. He has super hearing and all that. But in the core, it's his point of view. It's his perspective. (Clip of 1x05 airs: Kyle is at the school library.) Voice over: I learned about human tragedy, war, but Amanda provided the most difficult lesson. Julie Plec: You got the first season which is discovering who you are and what you're capable of. And then it's a double life. How do you live a double life when you are the most extraordinary person on the planet? And yet you're living with this family and have a crush with the girl next door. How do you juggle that? (Clip of 2x04 airs with various scenes: Kyle enters the warehouse where Foss is waiting. The Tragers enter their car as Kyle watches. He sees "***" on his cell phone. Kyle faces Stephen and Nicole.) Stephen: Being part of this family is about trust. Kyle: I know I've been distracted lately, but I never want to give you the impression that I didn't want to be here. (Nicole looks at him.)
Eric Tuchman, Executive Producer: A lot of what we do in Season 2 is a superhero paradigm. For Kyle, it's that balance between a secret life and his everyday life. And that begins to take a real toll on him to keep that secret from everybody.
(Clip of 2x04 airs: Declan in his car sees Kyle running away from the Trager home.) Declan: Where the hell is he going?
Matt: This year's Season 2 is really about the development of a superhero. And it's really about Kyle exploring his abilities and what's he capable of. And really honing his skills and figuring out what his purpose is here on Earth.
(Clip of 2x01 airs: Cameraman checks the camera angle of Kyle and Adam in "moving glass of water" scene.) (Clip of various 2x04 scenes airs: Kyle carries cement weights, falls down in the warehouse, and rock climbs.) (Clip of 2x03 airs: Foss and Kyle are in the warehouse.) Foss: Like Baylin said, you can change the world. Kyle: What if I don't want to change the world? What if I just want to be normal? Eric: Kyle realizes that he has extraordinary gifts and he has a responsibility to protect them and to develop them and to use them. But at the same time, he wants to be an ordinary teenager. Kyle's gifts are always based on what his mind can do. It's what his mind can tell his body to do. It's not that he has extraordinary physical abilities. His mind might be super powerful, but his body isn't necessarily any different than yours or mine. (Clip of various Season 2 scenes airs: Kyle reaches for the glass of water, but it moves. Kyle jumps up to Foss hanging on the ledge. Kyle and Foss talk in the warehouse.) Foss: This isn't about you walking on coals. It is about you using your mind to change the physiology of your body.
Matt: This year, they're definitely exploring a lot more with Kyle's abilities and powers. It's not whether he can walk on coals or walk through fire.
(Clip of 2x03 airs: Foss and Kyle stand next to a bed of coals. Kyle starts to put his right foot on the coals. Then Kyle carries a girl out of the burning shack. Declan: Kyle! (Kyle saves the girl.) How are you not burned? (Kyle looks at himself and starts to run away. Nicole sees he's not burned. David: He's super human with a soul. (Clip of 2x03 airs: Nicole talks to Kyle alone.) Nicole: You don't have to be in this alone. Kyle: I'm not. I have you. I have this family. I don't want anyone to have a reason to take me away. Nicole: I wouldn't let that happen.
J. Eddie Peck "Adam Baylin": There's a tremendous amount of exposure and vulnerability to every superhero and they have to be protected. They need those confidants. They need those liaisons to the outside world. They need always have a buffer to the rest of society. And I think that's the role that Foss, Baylin, and Taylor play to some certain degree.
(Clip of 2x04 airs: Foss talks to Kyle after he falls.) Kyle: I tried. Foss: Well, try harder. (Kyle grimaces in pain.) An ordinary mind can convince the body to stand the most extreme conditions. You should be able to handle more. (Clip of various Season 2 scenes airs: Kyle gets a headache and the skylight shatters on both Kyle and Foss. Using the hood of a junk car as a springboard, Kyle jumps through the plastic hanging on the open side of the warehouse and lands running across the street.)
Matt: You know, it's definitely fun to get to play a superhero. It's something that you fantasize about as a little kid, tying a sheet or pillow case around your neck and pretending to fly. So it's definitely really, really cool to try to explore that and be a superhero.
(Clip of various Season 2 scenes airs: Kyle runs into the fire to look for the girl. Kyle cringes from pain before the skylight shatters. Kyle saves Foss from falling off the ledge. Kyle looks around for the burglar. Someone turns on the car headlights. Kyle stands in the car's headlights as it approaches him.
(Matt is in front of Beachwood High School.)
Matt: It's a fantasy that we all like to live. Everybody wants to be Superman. Everyone wants to be Batman. It's a kinda of fun world to live in for a little while. (Clip of Pilot airs: Kyle carries a drunken Lori home.) |
